7 Tips For A Healthy Heart

May 11th, 2007

Whether you have heart problems, or just don’t want to develop them, you can have a healthy heart if you do a few basic things everyday. The important thing is to recognize little steps you can take and having a healthy heart can be done if you follow these 10 easy tips.

1. Take the stairs. Don’t use the elevator in your office building and don’t use the escalator at the mall, use the stairs every chance you get and you’ll be surprised at how much better you feel at the end of the day if you just follow this one simple step.

2. Spend a few minutes on housework everyday and don’t leave all of the cleaning for the weekend. You can get some good exercise vacuuming twice a week instead of one. Go outside most days and pull weeds or garden for a while.

3. Park as far away as possible. This is a simple thing you can do to get yourself walking more and when you go to the grocery store why not park in the furthest parking spot away from the entrance. Now you have no choice but to walk.

4. Stop early if you take the bus. Get off on the bus stop before your destination and walk the next block or two instead.

5. Walk after meals. If you have a few minutes after lunch get outside and take a brisk walk and if you work near a park, take a stroll around it. Even a short walk for a couple of blocks away from the office can add up by Friday.

6. Walk the dog. Don’t have a dog? You may want to think about getting one. Dogs love to take walks and they will sit right in front of you staring at you until you take them for one. Getting them out a couple of times a day is good for both of you.

7. Do things with the kids. Coach one of their sporting teams or go to the playground with them and play catch or shoot baskets, this is one of the most fun type of exercises you can give your heart.

These are just a few ideas that can help you have a healthier heart. Look around you as you go about your day and take every chance you get to move around. Having a healthy heart can be as easy as just making a few changes in your daily routine and the rewards to your health and your heart are well worth the effort.

9 Tips For Eating Healthy

May 9th, 2007

When it comes to eating healthy it is not as simple as changing your diet. Coming up with a variety of foods and eating them in moderation is important as well. Here are 9 tips to help you be healthier with what you eat.

1. You need to set a goal of a healthy weight for yourself. If you are too heavy you increase your chance of having high blood pressure and a heart attack as well as a stroke, diabetes, cancer and many other illnesses. Being too thin can also create health problems, your ideal weight will depend on your age, sex, height, and family history.

2. Eat in moderation. Most of us do not eat often enough and when we do the portions tend to be too large. You are better off eating smaller portions and a more balanced meal than you are to eat a large steak and no fruit.

3. Eat more often. You do not want to skip a meal to help yourself eat less. If you skip a meal you will be hungrier when you do eat which in turn will cause you to overeat. Having healthy snacks between meals is o.k. as long as you do not eat so much you are not hungry for your main meal.

4. Eat foods rich in nutrients. This would include whole grain products such as bread, fruit, vegetables, meat, chicken and fish and don’t forget your milk or other dairy products as well.

5. We mentioned fruits and vegetables. You need to eat 2-4 servings of fruit and 3-5 servings of vegetables most days. Most of us do not do that. Eating healthy must include these important foods.

6. Be realistic in what you eat. If you are getting to much fat in your foods reduce it, but eliminating something you really love to eat is not going to work, so really the key is to simply cut back on it.

7. If you miss out on something, don’t worry and make up for it the next day. No one is perfect.

8. Keep a log of what you eat. Do this for 3 or 4 days. When you eat write it down, this will help you notice a pattern of what you are doing right and doing wrong so you can make adjustments.

9. If you have a candy bar now and again, so what. If you eat out too often, just cut it down. If you are making progress in eating healthy pat yourself on the back and keep working at it.

There probably has been more written on the subject of how to eat healthy foods than almost any health subject. Hopefully these 9 tips will summarize some of this and get you on your way to better health.
